Link after defeating Ganon, decided to set sail away from Hyrule on a lone mission of training. In case of another attack he wanted to have his skills as good as they could be. After much training, one day he decided it was time to return to Hyrule. He bought a small boat and headed across the sea back toward the land of Hyrule. His return to Hyrule was doomed though. A terrible storm arose, lightning stuck his ship and his ship was sunk. Holding on to his life Link ended up on the shore of an island by the name of Koholint.
He was found by a girl by the name of Marin. She took him into her home, where she and her father Tarin lived, and therefore saved his life.
When Link awoke he Tarin told him of the monsters that appeared after he was found. Tarin gave Link his shield and told him more of his stuff washed up on the beach. Link soon set out to see what remained. When he got to the beach he saw his sword. When he picked it up an owl came and told him that the only way to leave the island was to wake the Wind Fish. He had to do this by retrieving 8 instruments.
Link searched the island for the instruments. He retrieved them one by one. Link found the Full Moon Cello in Tail Cave, the Conch Horn in the Bottle Grotto, the Sea Lily Bell in the Key Cavern, the Surf Harp in Angler's Cave, the Wind Marimba in Catfish's Maw, the Coral Triangle in the Face Shrine, the Organ of Evening Calm in the Eagle's Tower, and the Thunder Drum in Turtle Rock.
In the southern shrine he found a inscription on a wall that said:
"To the Finder. . .
The Isle of Koholint is but an illusion. . .
Human, Monster, Sea, Sky. . .
A scene on the lid of the sleeper's eye. . .
Awake the dreamer, and Koholint will vanish
much like a bubble on a needle. . .
Cast-away, you should know the truth!"
Once he had all 8 Instruments of the Sirens he went to the top Mount Tamaranch. He took out the ocarina he found in the dream shrine and played the 'Ballad of the Wind Fish'. The Egg was opened! He went inside and found a maze of passageways. Link from what he discovered, found the correct path through the maze. He was now facing the evil Nightmares that have kept the Wind Fish in its eternal sleep.
Link beat each Nightmare one by one until they were all defeated. Once that happened a staircase appeared. He went up it and found the Owl that has been helping him throughout his adventure. He reveiled himself as the guardian of the island. He thanked Link and then left. Next came the Wind Fish. He also thanked Link and asked him to play the 'The Ballad of the Wind Fish' also known as the 'Song of Awakening' one more time. When he did he saw everyone that he knew disappear into nothing. The Wind Fish reassured him though that one day he may recall the dream and Koholint will once again live.
Link soon woke up on a piece of wood left from his ship just in time to see the Wind Fish fly overhead, giving him hope of seeing his now gone friends again.
